Think that the hike itself is what all you need to do to improve your fitness?  Well, to some degree that statement is correct – but to really get into hiking, you need to do some fitness training in order to get the maximum benefit from your hikes.

In this post, we’ll discuss some things you can do to improve your fitness for your hikes.

There are several strategies you can employ:

  1. Start slow, but be regular.  Beginning with shorter, less strenuous hikes can be beneficial. Don’t have time to get out to hike?  Try going for a walk on a treadmill.  The point is to get out and get moving in order to help achieve your fitness goals.
  2. Try to have at least one long hike per week.  Keeping a steady pace over a long distance increases your endurance and overall fitness.
  3. Challenge yourself.  Doing the same workout every day gets pretty boring.  Try to change it up and hike different trails when you can.  The new challenge of the hike will make you more excited and will make you want to get out more!
  4. Put on a backpack.  Believe it or not putting on the additional weight will increase your fitness by making your body work harder on your hikes.  You don’t need to carry a huge amount of weight, as little as ten extra pounds will do.
