You might ask: “What could go wrong, I’m only going on a hike”.  For the most part, not a whole lot can go wrong, but you should still be prepared just in case.

Depending on where and when you are hiking, things like time of day, weather, and geography can all contribute to something going wrong.

For example, it could be something as simple as wearing shorts and walking up against a thorn bush cutting your leg.  Did you bring along something to stop the bleeding?  Do you have anti-bacterial ointment to put on the cut to prevent infection?

On a short hike, you can simply turn around and go home to get yourself patched up, but on a longer hike – you’d be better off being prepared.

Here are some essentials for your next big hike:

  • Map of the area you plan to hike
  • Compass (either on your phone, or an old-fashioned one)
  • Pocket Knife
  • First Aid kit (make sure it’s stocked!)
  • Warm clothes – this is important especially if you are hiking in cooler temperatures, or there is the possibility you will be hiking after the sun goes down.
  • Insect repellant
  • Sunscreen
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Any medications you might take

There are many other factors to consider, again depending on the time of day, if you plan to camp for the night, and the time of year.
