There is an endless list of items you can bring along with you on a hike, but here are my top 4 things that are a must for every hike!  This list assumes a few things, primarily that the hike is during the day, good weather and is warm out.  The list changes significantly if you’re hiking during rainy, cold, or overnight.

  1. Good hiking shoes. Do yourself a favor and get a good pair of hiking shoes that are lightweight and waterproof.  They will serve you well in all conditions and improve safety.
  2. Water.  Hydration is important, especially on a long hike.  A good rule of thumb is to bring 1 liter of water for every five miles of hiking.  A good hiking water bottle is something you should have with you.
  3. Food.   As important as water – if you are going on an all-day hike, don’t forget to bring along some healthy snacks and hiking food to fuel your body.   Also don’t forget to clean up after yourself LEAVE NO TRACE.
  4. Navigation/Communication.  These days, this is likely to be the same device as most smartphones have both incorporated into them.  You can take the wrong turn on a trail and get yourself turned around and lost, you should have something that can help you find your way back to where you started.
